ABOUT
Sophie Lloyd is a London based artist working with sugar and lead. She graduated in 2023 from City and Guilds of London Art School with a BA in Fine Art. Following her degree show installation, ‘The Live Show’ she was awarded the inaugural Anthony Caro Sculpture Prize. Lloyd was also awarded the New Blood Emerging Art Prize at the Saatchi Gallery in 2023. She is currently an artist in residence at Lee Alexander McQueen’s Sarabande Foundation. She is working towards her first solo show in London.

Sophie Lloyd’s artistic practice explores passive media consumption. She caricatures the idea of the ‘perfect consumer’; profitable and reduced to sleepless, dopamine junkies. Her work facades a pre-cinema era, wishfully drawing from the magical qualities of fairground, theatre and stained glass. Her medium of sugar and lead reflects the delightful, sickly, and addictive nature of consumerism and entertainment. Lloyd’s process of working with sugar is like a series of episodic dramas in collaboration with the sugar and its reactivity. Her work is at times a kind of ‘comedy of errors’ as the sugar misbehaves within the constraints of ‘stained glass’.
